Rule #5 Eat 30 - 50 g fiber a day

Okay . . . back to the skinny rules!  I've kind of been following them somewhat.  It's hard to know what makes a difference for sure.  I'm guessing this is a pretty good rule, but when I first read it I thought, "I don't want to count my fiber too!"  I'm diligently counting calories.  I don't think myfitnesspal does fiber too.  Maybe it does--I should check.  Anyway, I'm wondering if I'm already getting enough fiber anyway with all the fruits and vegetables.  Have any of you ever tried to count your fiber?  I'd be curious to know how much you need to eat of grains, vegetables, or whatever to meet this requirement.

Heather, I know you had a break, but I'm sure you'll be back on track and going strong as usual!  Cherie is working hard in New York.  What a team!

Wednesday

I got the Skinny Rules CD from the library yesterday.  It's only one CD--must not be a very long book!  So, I'm going to start listening to it tomorrow as I drive to and from school and then I can give you more info.

How's everyone doing?  I'm seeing better progress since I started the Building Good Habits competition.  I'm pretty sure it's the lack of daily sugar that's helping!

Rule #4 Slash intake of refined flour and grains.

Well, I think this is a pretty obvious one.  I don't want to say that I never, ever eat white flour, but it's actually pretty rare.  He also says to eat brown over white rice (done).  I had oatmeal this morning!  So to me this is a pretty easy rule to follow, and I also don't think it's very controversial.  Thoughts?

I've been doing well the past little while on my goals.  In fact, I'm just 4 lbs away from opening up the clothes box for the next size down.  It's kind of like a ritual/reward.  I went to DI today and found some size 6 Banana Republic summer pants that still had the original tags on.  I bought them for next year.  How's that for positive thinking!

Rule #3 Eat lowfat protein at every meal.

I'm sure Heather already does this!  I'm not sure how much protein he means (I'll let you know when I read the book), but I know I eat at least some protein at every meal.  Maybe he means to be sure to include protein even with snacks.  The book on insulin resistance says to always eat some protein when eating any carbohydrates.  Or, maybe the emphasis should be on the low-fat.  Any thoughts?

Rule #2: Don't Drink Your Calories

So it sounds like all 2 of us agree that rule #1 is a good one.

The next rule has to do with drinks.  Bob says drinking your calories is a bad idea.  He's talking about alcohol (I think we've all got that one covered!), pop, store-bought juice . . . stuff like that.  I agree with him.  I used to have lemonade or other similar drinks all the time and was amazed when I found out they're usually about 100 calories per cup, and it doesn't take long to drink several cups.  I pretty much drink only water now, so this rule won't be hard to follow.

I'm sad to see the Upcoming Events column becoming so short!! Maybe we need to plan for 2013 so we have lots of activities to list!

Skinny Rules

I've been trying to think of something to write about since we're no longer posting each day whether or not we met our goals.  Today I was reading a post by someone in one of my competitions who said he was having great success following Bob Harper's "Skinny Rules."  Well, I'm proud to say I resisted the temptation to immediately order the book (my goal is NO MORE DIET BOOKS EVER!), but I did order a copy from the library.  I'm #8 on the waiting list.  I went to Amazon to see what people had to say about it, and someone had posted the 20 rules!  Sooooo, I thought it would be interesting to write about each rule, see what everyone's experience has been with that rule, and try them out.  Rather than do all 20 at once, we can do one at a time and see if we agree with Bob.

Rule #1:  Drink 2 cups of water before each meal.  Drink enough water throughout the day to total 10 cups.

It seems like all diets tell you to drink a lot of water.  Do you think it really  makes a difference?  There have been times I've been super-diligent about getting all my water in, but for the past several months I haven't worried about it too much.  Today I've made sure I drank the 2 cups just before I ate.  I really did feel quite full at the end of the meal!  I still have 3 more cups of water to go, but I'm going to do it.

A Tip

On the Skinny Minny Blog, someone recently posted a tip I'd like to share.  One of the participants said she tries to have a 12 hour break between dinner and breakfast the following morning.  She heard it might help her metabolism or something.  Well, I think it's worth a try--it certainly won't hurt!  So today I didn't have breakfast until 8 since I ate something at 7:30 last night.  Tonight we had dinner late, so I'll have to have a late breakfast again.  I can see that this will be easy as long as I'm not in school.  Once school starts, no more eating after 6 p.m.!!

Middle of the week and doing well! We leave to come home tomorrow. It's been really fun but I'm excited to get home. I have been eating well and running and I'm hopeful that Friday's weigh in will reflect that. I'm looking forward to Friday and being around some of my favorite people!!

Hey

Good summer for the HLC.  Keep up the good work.  Great fun at triathlon yesterday.  Sort of want to do it again next year and work out some of the kinks in between events.  I could have been faster had I known how it all works.  Had fun on a real road bike.  Looking forward to reaching goal weight and seeing the rest of you get to your goals soon.  Thanks for the encouragement.  Keep up the good work Heather and Kim.  Lisa you can do this.
